Unity is a great tool for getting started in game development. Download the free edition. It is also a very complicated tool at the same time. To get started properly, you need to follow tutorials. I strongly recommend that you begin with the first 2 tutorials: Roll-ball-tutorial and Space Shooter Tutorial.
